Disc Golf Showcase

The sport of Disc Golf has been a great passion of mine and has introduced me to hundreds of people through friendly competitions and casual rounds in the Oslo area. Disc Golf is a “lifetime” sport, an outdoor activity for all ages, and all types of people. It takes its principles from traditional golf, but the sport is more inclusive: Almost all courses are free to play and the discs cost a fraction of what you pay for most other sports gear. Best of all, it takes you out to parks and woodlands were you can find your own way to master the challenges put in front of you.

Disc Golf has seen an enormous growth over the last few years, especially in Northern Europe where I live. Having traveled so many times to Romania I started to think how I could help introduce this sport to people there. As a professional sport its non-existent and the only course I could find was situated at a remote tourist destination in the mountains.

On one of my trips last year (2021) I managed to meet up with the self proclaimed “King of Disc Golf in Romania”, the friendly PE Teacher Quentin Young. As a Canadian citizen living in the country for many years he has attempted to build a course at the American School Campus in an effort to promote the sport. I had finally met a person who could help me demonstrate Disc Golf to people in the city…

Together with another frisbee enthusiast from the Ultimate community of Bucharest, Vlad Tudor, we arranged a showcase event in the Herastrau Park on 17th of June 2022. Our aim was simply to provide discs and a few baskets that would enable people to try out the sport with us. A lot of the participants were Ultimate players from the local club. As a sister sport to DG they were naturally interested in another sport involving disc throwing. After getting through a rain shower the clouds lifted and we enjoyed a great afternoon setting up improvised lanes as well as just practicing putting and talking about technique. Some participants were new to the concept but others got to try out something they had only heard about. This was only the first step, I hope to be involved with more events promoting Disc Golf in Romania. My dream is that there will be a course in Bucharest in the not so distant future…
